Background
The TIE Assault was designed as a heavy-duty fighter for elite units shortly after the initial release of the regular TIE Fighter. The larger wing area made faster engines possible and a shield system - which reflected the higher respect the Empire had for its elite units. These craft are supposed to do what the regular TIE Fighter cannot: operate in small numbers.
From the start the TIE Assault was being modified to boost its performance even more, Darth Vader's modified version (The X-1) boosted double the engines, a hyperdrive and advanced targetting systems. Eventually this lead to the TIE Advanced and TIE Interceptor models.
