Lieutenant Commander Since his last promotion in the middle of July, Lieutenant Javik Keynes has successfully earned two monthly merit medals while being an active flight member. He has entertained us all with his Imperial Navy Personnel Record, passed the TIE Corps Core exam, and has already joined the Typhoon tradition of being a regular participant in the Trivia competitions. I can't wait to see what is next from Javik. Given all of this, it is my pleasure to recommend his promotion to Lieutenant Commander.

Imperial Navy Personnel Record

Current title: Lieutenant Commander Javik Keynes
Current ID line: FM/LCM Javik Keynes/Typhoon 3-2/Wing X/ISDII Challenge/Battlegroup III
Gender: Male
Species: Human
Date of birth: 25 BBY
Place of birth: Ord Mantell
Marital status: Single
Family information: No current relations to speak of.
Social status: -Galactic average citizen
-Records on identity disks related to SUBJ:KEYNES, JAVIK are either largely corrupted, absent, or missing most data entry prior to 1 BBY.
-Minor positive reputation among certain political houses in the Sepan system for past services rendered. Fading from memory and usefulness with time.
-Single Imperial Arrest Record for Unlawful Possession of Armed Spacecraft, 3 ABY. Charges subsequently dropped without prosecution.
-Standing open rolling six-month contract with Ithorian Defense League, currently frozen.
Significant events of childhood: Javik Keynes was born under a different name on Ord Mantell, a planet historically deeply under the influence of the Black Sun crime syndicate but which routinely suffered under factional disputes. The sole son of a mid-level aerospace port supervisor of a minor trading house on one of the planet’s outlying continents, Javik grew up to a standard, if somewhat remote education, and above average economic means.

As a child during the 19 BBY Battle of Ord Mantell between CIS and the Shadow Collective, Javik was left with permanent curiosity towards the stars as his earliest memories involve watching the spectacular fight and light show from planetside with the naked eye and sadness when falling debris littered onto his province, sadly resulting in the death of several relations and the short term crippling of the local economy.

Coming of age and following a modest standard planetary education, Javik’s intense fascination with flight and spacecraft meant that as he was brought into the family affair he gravitated to skiff and hauler operations, to the chagrin of his father who would have preferred the son seek more stable, lucrative, and safer administrative roles. Eventually Javik’s stubbornness won out, seeing him move into operating atmospheric haulers and light transports within the system’s gravity well throughout his late teenage years.

Unfortunately, the continuing interest and gravitation to off-world work was directly at odds with his father’s protective and traumatized instincts who eventually issued an ultimatum that the now young man give up his expanding orbital affairs or give up his inheritable stake in the port facilities. When Javik stood his ground and expected to call his father’s bluff on the matter, his credentials in the trading house were lost, along with his employment and last major familial connection.

Now unemployed and with an abrupt loss of all financial accounts, Javik retreated to the planet’s capital in search of employment and took on work as the operator of sublight hoppers for a rival trading firm and thinly veiled Black Sun front. Over the next year, Javik developed both a rudimentary understanding of the political machinations of the rival syndicates in the greater region including an ongoing low level “street fight” between local BS affiliates and a local rising faction of the Zann Consortium.

Over the next three years Javik would find himself eventually offered the opportunity to pilot one of the very few and antiquated Black Sun escort fighters in the system where he learned the basics of space combat, small unit tactics, convoy escort, and hit-and-fade tactics. Despite the presence of a limited number of armed fighters on all sides of the syndicate faction scrum in the system, the sheer realities of the all-or-nothing cost of space combat meant that very little bloodshed actually occurred between syndicate fights in space.

A status quo quickly emerged with each side preferring to withdraw and surrender escorted charges to the victor once shields had failed in combat. This both proved a fertile learning opportunity for the crews involved, whilst both limiting the losses for the factional parties as they jockeyed for dominance of the local legal and illicit trade routes without being crippled by the insurmountable cost of losing expensive starfighters.

This relatively bloodless stalemate was not to last as the newly constituted Galactic Empire started to arrive into the region in light force around 1 BBY. While ostensibly the Bright Jewel Sector would insist on its independence, and largely remain so during the coming Galactic Civil War, the periodic presence of light Imperial Naval Task Forces were now on the scene to enforce their interpretation law and stability. The incessant low-level open skirmishing and relative chaos on the hyperlanes of the decade-long “turf war” between crime syndicates was simply not acceptable in what the Imperials increasingly viewed as their space.

The Zann Consortium was first to see the threat of this changing tide in the sector and launched a devastating massed and fully lethal ambush and strike on the Black Sun “security” facilities. Javik had seen himself elevated to what amounted to second in command of these very meager fighter assets of this security division at the time of this raid. While able to survive the ambush that killed the majority of his colleagues, one of which who had drifted into becoming on-again/off-again relationship with, a distraught Javik escaped the ordeal back to Ord Mantell in a damaged fightercraft.

Upon return to the system, Javik was picked up by the local Imperial VSD Red Duchess and detained. Ultimately no formal charges were pressed against him as private security craft were not illegal and no wrongful actions had been observed, but the Imperial Task Force confiscated the vessel and discharged the now broken Keynes back onto Ord Mantell.

Shortly thereafter Javik was picked up by the local Black Sun Boss Qi’Ratten Hakkeen, who accused him of cowardice, failure, and attempted desertion in giving his expensive ship over to Imperial hands. He was unexpectedly spared by Hakkeen who had been the one to recruit him into the fledgling security operations years earlier, but was still exiled from the local Black Sun syndicate and capital on penalty of death should he be seen again. Javik returned to his father in hopes of returning to his originally offered life but did not find a welcome door as his father had become a melancholic spice addict in the years of his absence, never fully recovering from the events in 19 BBY. Ultimately Javik was able to convince his parent to pay for his passage off-system in exchange for not returning and bringing up old pains again.
Significant events of adulthood: With a one-way passage off-world Javik ended up in the systems owned by the Corporate Sector Authority where he sold his services as a mercenary pilot for security details on highly provisional and specific duration contracts shortly after the events at Yavin IV.

This was largely the first time Javik encountered true cold blooded combat in fights against pirates (or more often between feuding corporate factions masking as pirates) under superiors that deemed their security details as “expendable losses”. Despite the harsh nature of life as expendable “corporate security”, Javik’s flight time in the Bright Jewel Sector had given him the opportunity to learn tactics and skills to survive what was an incredibly dangerous environment of fellow mercenary rivals and pirates.

The constant stream of losses and callous nature with how he was employed in this time period hardened the still young man and eventually Javik saw the corporation mercenary contracts for the financial trap it was. Craft lost in space were able to be written off in complicated insurance policies or replaced with the proceeds of captured material from a rival. Pilots would have been expensive, but only received the overwhelming majority of their lucrative compensation at the end of their contracts, during which deliberate increasingly risky employment meant few lived to see.

Developing a key sense of battle caution and becoming willing to treat his more junior “allies” as expendably as his employer, Javik was able to survive against the odds in his year-long contract. Javik cashed out and left Corporate Space with a modestly large and stabilizing sum of credits but sickening distaste for the Corporate Sector sometime in 2 ABY.

It was at this time that Javik Keynes had hired the splicer needed to create the documents and identity discs of his adopted name, with the intent to give himself a safe clean slate from any lingering threats from Black Sun or the Zann. This crucial task completed, once again Keynes boarded a long range transport with a one way ticket to a new corner of the galaxy.

Javik would ultimately find himself in the Sepan system where he was hired on by the Dimok Government in the Sepan system as Subject Matter Expert to help modernize their expanding fighter forces. This would also be the first time that Javik had found himself in a heavy bomber craft like the venerable Y-Wings that the Dimok had procured.

However with forged credentials and several years of bloody pitfighting to draw from, Keynes worked as instructor and advisor to the Dimok on how to conduct small scale hit-and-fade operations in the craft over a period of several months. Unfortunately, the reality of why the Dimok wanted these skills became clear as their people’s frustrations with their Ripoblus neighbours boiled over into open civil war.

In the initial actions, Javik was willing to accept a greatly increased amount of hazard pay to join the Dimok in their raids, however this ended in 3 ABY when a raid he was part of was surprised by the sudden arrival of the VSD Protector under Admiral Harkov’s command. As the tide quickly turned against the vulnerable Y-Wings in the face of the nimble Imperial Navy TIEs, Javik and a few of the raiding Dimok jumped out and escaped.

On return to the staging area Javik immediately tore up his remaining contract and once again left system on the next available transport. Keynes had taken Dimok credits for a training role, and accepted the morally gray hazard bonus when the Dimok had shown him evidence their Ripoblus neighbours were developing weapons for guerillas and terrorists. However that had certainly not extended so far as to go toe-to-toe with the Galactic Empire. As he read holonews accounts and battle summaries of what would later be known as the Sepan Civil War in the days that followed he was glad he had made the decision to run.

By this time the Galactic Civil War was pervasive enough that even the Imperial dominated holonet could not hide the extent of the turmoil and a number of sectors had even openly called themselves for what was being known as the greater Rebellion or “Rebel Alliance”. While Javik personally did overly care for the political squabbles among systems it was hard not to address the painful new economic reality of galaxy wide civil war as 3 ABY rolled into 4 ABY.

The Galactic Civil War was widening and it was drawing in more and more of the galaxy. Where once relatively lucrative and safe mercenary, patrol, or “instructing” corporate and civil security contracts were abundant and only faced the odd lightly armed pirate, the reality was now far different.

Small “Rebel” forces and units were seemingly everywhere and nowhere, sucking the air out of mercenary talent and freely preying on any corporate or merchant interest that was not openly turning against the Imperials. Escort work was one thing against a handful of ill repaired Z-95s and Cloakshapes, but these Rebellion forces were in steadily growing numbers and in increasingly modern craft. High minded ideals and slogans about brotherhood and liberty flooded the holonet but they would kill and steal just as quickly if a merchant convoy had something they needed and they weren’t willing to make a suitable “donation” to the “fight against tyranny”.

The ensuing chaos did nothing but attract an even harder crackdown by Imperial forces wherever they were present. The once imposing and unexpected presence of an ISD in the sector used to be a sign that a current mercenary contract would be safe and pirate-free way to easy money. Now however, the Imperials were becoming just as dangerous as the Rebels they fought as they began to view anything and everything that was armed and not flagging an Imperial transponder as a terrorist in disguise.

Throughout early 4 ABY Javik continued a string of short-term merchant escort or local security force contracts, but was never able to do much better than keep his financial head above water as he would do so without a personal craft of his own. After two near fatal run-ins with Rebel “anti-piracy patrols” and one short detainment by an Imperial checkpoint until his credentials could be sent from his employer, Javik gave notice on his current month-to-month contract and once again found himself in a starliner terminal.

His once impressive stash of credits from the Corporate Sector was now several zeroes smaller than it once was, and in a galaxy seemingly screaming for competent and qualified starfighter pilots, none of the limited options before him seemed to be very survivable or affordable as the daily battle and destruction news rolled through on the holonet.

With a resignation of defeat and uncertainty, a still young but hardened near 30 year old purchased the first of several tickets to take him back to the Bright Jewel Sector, still claiming neutrality in a galaxy coming apart at the seams.

Javik Keynes returned to Ord Mantell shortly after the Battle of Endor but before the news and repercussions had started to filter through the greater galaxy. The starting collapse of the Galactic Empire and ultimate signing of the Galactic Concordance found Javik working as contract pilot for the Ithorian Defense League who were largely, by his estimation, completely inept and needed all the help they could get in space.

While Javik had developed no hard sentiments one way or another to the sides of the Galactic Civil War, and had even actively fought against both in open battle on at least one occasion (although he kept that detail to himself), he had developed a hard desire for stability and security.

Right from the opening days of his involvement with Black Sun, Javik was able to reflect that what had been a period of excitement and thrilling adventure for him had been nothing more than chaos, uncertainty, and tragedy for the greater system. The centralized power of the Corporate Sectors and their blase expendable attitude to anything that was not a profit margin had left him permanently emotionally scarred. Despite the new propaganda coming down the holonet from Chandrilla and their proclaimed New Republic, his experiences with the “Rebel Alliance” had not looked much better than ideological driven piracy. Security, Order, Stability. The galaxy was in sore need of it. Keep the spacelanes clear, and let people get on with their lives.

With the Galactic Civil War now over, despite its proclaimed neutrality, the Bright Jewel Sector still found itself on the edge of Imperial Remnant influence. In late 5 ABY Javik Keynes took one more trip back to Ord Mantell under his assumed name . He decided to chance one more attempt to see his father, upon arriving in the continent of his birth only to learn that the not-so-old man had died of a spice overdose shortly after he had left five years earlier.

Back in the Ord Mantell spaceport, mindlessly skimming through the holofeed as he awaited a return the soul-sucking monotony on Ithor, Javik’s eyes held for several seconds too long on the recruitment ad.

The local Remnant forces wanted pilots.

No more age limits.
No more academy on Corsuscant.
No more life expectancy measured in days in unshielded craft while in active war.
Reliable pay.
Input on assignments.
Shielded, modern craft.
Stability.
Order.
Security.

Five minutes had passed before he realized he had just stopped and was still staring blankly at the information on the page. Yes, he was getting old and space combat was a young person’s game. But he wasn’t that old. And the War was over. The Navy would be back to largely peacetime duties of rooting out piracy with overwhelming force. There was still the thrill of combat, but a much lower risk of death and the ability to become something more than just a perpetual drifter and contract man. He had met many in the past decade, although not many all that much older than he was now.

Stability. Order. Security.

That’s what the galaxy had needed. It is what is still needed.

Hell, he could use some too.

Four months later, Sub-Lieutenant Keynes, in black uniform that still felt too tight and constraining, stepped out of the transport onto the cold, glossy deck of the ISD II Challenge.
Alignment and attitude: Equivalent of a Lawful Neutral. At the end of the day the galaxy does not give one damn about you. You’re just atoms and if you’re not careful you will be nothing but again sooner than expected. Keep things civil, keep things orderly, and just let the galaxy live and let live.
Previous occupations: Mercenary related work of various contract styles and duties.
Hobbies Light machinery tinkering. Speederbikes. Lakeside sailing (no oceans).
Tragedies in life: There’s been a few.
Phobias and allergies: Thalassophobia.
Sensitivity to cold.
Views on the Empire and the Emperor's Hammer: Means to an end. Generally speaking the Empire seemed to be the least worst of the lot in the Galaxy. Merciless and grinding in its lack of empathy but entirely predictable if you just listened to what they wanted and stayed out of the way. That predictability is a big draw now at the end of the Galactic Civil War. Here are the rules, here’s how we’re going to keep the peace; don’t get in the way. Javik can, and does respect that.
Reason for enlisting in the Emperor's Hammer: Stable pay and reliable access to a medical droid and bacta tank is the open answer.
That he misses the rush of combat is the quiet one.

RTF 2025 Round 2 Fiction - Battle for Gasriese - Door-Knockers 2025-09-29

This is an entry for RTF 2025 Fiction Prompt 2. It begins immediately after the end of the Round 1 entry. However there is only one exposition point critical to the plot that was laid out in Part 1, and it is reiterated later in the story, so skipping that shouldn't be a problem. As a brief synopsis, the TC raid against First Order in the Gasriese sector was a success. Significant FO forces were destroyed or driven off, and a number of FO craft had been captured. On the surface of Jundaxa, large numbers of EH ground forces have been landed, and a significant number of surface anti-space batteries were now under EH control or disabled. Battlegroups II (ISDs Warrior and Relentless) and Battlegroup III (ISD Challenge and MC90 Renegade) had been left to secure the sector, whilst Battlegroup rotated out to refit and reload after the battle. This scene takes place in the relative quiet of "mop up" operations in the Gasriese sector and is centered around the ISD Challenge.

RTF 2025 Round 1 Fiction - Battle for Gasriese - Testing Day 2025-09-29

RTF '25 involved two fiction prompts. The first of which was three pronged prompt allowing members to explore a different facet of the aftermath of a large scale engagement with First Order forces over the planet Jundaxa in the Gasriese system. This piece takes place following the battle as local TC forces begin to evaluate some First Order equipment seized in the operation. Unfortunately I missed the submission deadline for Prompt 1. However as the events of Prompt 2 begin immediately where this story ends I felt it worth sharing. At its core it is a small snapshot of one of the thousands of routine, largely uninteresting stories that occur daily within daily life aboard Battle Group III. It has been a long time since I have written creatively, so some of the structure and syntax may be improper. But with that caveat aside, enjoy.
