To echo what other reviewers have mentioned, this battle plays more like a collection of free missions. The plot is thin, and if I recall correctly there wasn't any briefing more than one page. Mission 2 in particular seems irrelevant. On a slight plus, the in-game messages do help flesh out the story. Gameplay is easy, even on Hard difficulty level; the one possible exception is the first mission where I would call it "tricky" versus hard if you don't happen to notice what's going on around you. The last major issue is the ludicrous docking times, which take some time even on X4 speed. It wouldn't be too bad if there were something to do during that time, but there really isn't.

Good battle four mission battle! This one was enjoyable from both a plot and gameplay perspective. The briefings are well structured, with some interesting animations that I don't recall seeing before. There is plenty of background information available from the Flight Officer and/or README. In the gameplay, there is an assortment of different mission types. Incorporation of the V-Wing made playing the battle a different experience, whether you were fighting them using Imperial ships, or flying using one in the later missions. On hard difficulty, it definitely takes some work to clear out the enemy fighters. Overall well done!

This was a decently prepared four mission battle. The earlier missions are probably a bit stronger that the latter, especially mission four (where I managed to clean out everybody and then just had to sit around waiting for AI ships to dock). There is some versatility in craft selection between the missions, which is always a plus in my opinion. The plot or mission objectives weren’t overly complicated, but moved along appropriately. Overall a decent fly. I flew it on hard.

This is an acceptable battle, but nothing to write home about. Starting off, the briefings are somewhat sloppy with some structural errors. The plot isn’t particularly well defined, with the enemy simply being “traitors.” In terms of gameplay, things generally work as expected. There is at least one mission where the capitals have fighter orders, resulting in some odd behavior. The enemy craft selection is also a bit odd, with Rebels occasionally flying unshielded T/Ds (?). This is one of those battles where if you’re playing for score, you’re going to have to stick around awhile after the mission objectives are completed to try to rack up points, which isn’t my favorite.

With apologies to the mission's author... meh. I think this is about as basic as you can make a mission and actually have it be one. The plot is not developed (capture the "majic scrolls" and save the Empire??). The implementation is lazy with no immersion - the station has no real defenses, you don't have any other friendly forces, and your wingmen immediately lawn dart into the station when they try to attack it. Overall boring and poorly executed. The plus? It's a mission point.

Gameplay on this mission is acceptable and pretty straightforward. However, the technical implementation spoils what little plot line is there (as soon as you check your mission goals you see what's up), so that's unfortunate. The goals are also a bit oddly structured. Mission briefing is extremely minimal. On the plus side, you're flying an unshielded T/I (one of my favorite craft), so the no shields is a nice change of pace from the typical T/D missions. I played the mission on hard.

This was a quick and straightforward free mission, even on hard difficulty. You're assigned to clear out the incoming rebel fighters, and it's about as complex as that. The way the fighters came in was actually an interesting change of pace compared to the typical waves, and mixed things up a little bit. It's also a nice change of pace to NOT be in the typical T/D. (I can confirm the problem with the messages, but didn't happen to notice the X-wing issue.)

An acceptable free mission. There is a basic plot to it (at least one that gives you context for where you're at and what you're doing), although the briefing itself is pretty minimal. In terms of gameplay, there are plenty of waves of enemy fighters to shoot. The main thing I found missing was some focus regarding the capital ships. There is no dedicated friendly element that is supposed to go after them, nor are the enemy capitals really doing anything. They pretty much sit there waiting on you to clear out the fighters, so that you can grind away at them with lasers. Overall, the start was decent, but the end drug on needlessly. (Played on hard difficulty.)

This is obviously a specialty mission, so my usual assessment of plot does not apply. That being said, it is polished in terms of development and presentation of required information to the player. Disregarding the original purpose of the mission, it is a good environment to work on quickly getting kills without your wingmen stealing them. The AI wingmen are not player orderable, so you have to move quick and efficiently to get a good score. It's worth a play!

Great free mission! This mission is a good example of what you can accomplish with some creativity. The mission's mechanics aren't overly complicated, but work well and add an interesting twist to the type of mission you'd 'normally' be performing. In particular, the plot makes this mission work. The background information is in the readme, but also built into the briefing, so you know exactly what you're walking into. There are also little attention to detail things throughout the mission to keep things immersive. Nice work!

Overall this free mission was well designed and developed, and a breath of fresh air. The plot is developed and logical, which is difficult to pull off in a constrained format such as a free mission; the briefing provided the necessary background information. It was evident that some work had gone into testing the mission, and I didn't see any obvious bugs or concerns. Well done to Robert Hogan.

This mission is a hot mess, I have no idea what is supposed to be going on here from either a plot perspective or gameplay implementation. Rando's comments are on point. There is supposedly some type of new alliance between the EH and some other faction. A different alliance made of rebels and others ("CSA") then attacks. Things go downhill here. A collection of assorted faction fighters begin spawning out of a... friendly container transport? Meanwhile your forces are surrounded on three sides by capitals from the enemy faction. However, they don't do much except lumber along. No bombers to speak of to help with them.

The only plus? The primary objective takes about 60 seconds to complete.

This mission is simple and quick enough to complete (even on hard), and continues with the same enemy in the other Pif free missions. There is a basic plot, and you do your portion of the mission while other fighters take care of theirs (which I find a plus). The selection of enemy craft is a bit of change of pace. Overall, perfectly playable with no obvious problems, but also not especially memorable.

Very thin plot on this one... you "arrive" somewhere to take out all of the enemies... who conveniently hyper in to meet you. Dueling at dawn I guess? Mission objectives couldn't be simpler though: kill everything. Unfortunately, it seems as if somebody forgot to pack the warheads... and the bombers, because you're stuck taking out capitals with lasers only. Not an experience I enjoy. Your wingmen are at least competent though, so that eases the pain a bit.

Seems to be a continuation of the prior Pif #1, at least in terms of who the enemy is. It is a simple enough mission to complete even on hard (and relatively quick): ID some ships, deal with ones that need dealing with. Overall, not bad - there are some little nuggets in there where the maker put in a bit of thought.

This is a perfectly acceptable free mission. Unlike some other reviews, I didn't mind several waves of Z-95s - it is quite satisfying to watch them explode after a couple good hits. Clean them out, and you have met your primary objectives. If you want to stay and play, there are some secondary and bonus objectives also available, with a small surprise (at least on hard) if you're not careful.

Not a whole lot of substance here. This mission would be best described as a simulator-type mission, where you have waves of different fighters to clear with generally increasing difficulty. On hard, the AI is obviously turned up, which is actually a nice change from the dumb AI implemented in many of the missions that just kind of plod along. Other than that, it's just clear a wave of fighters and repeat for a few iterations.

The plot is a bit creative I suppose, but it's not particularly my cup of tea since I generally prefer more immersive missions. The mission is straightforward, even on hard: destroy the platform, transports, and a couple misc items - that's it. There isn't any real opposition other than the guns of the platform itself. For what it is, it works fine: quick and easy completion points, but nothing especially memorable or challenging.

I don’t know if I’m somehow playing this one differently than other people, but I’m getting an entirely different experience with this mission. I’ve tried it a couple of times. When the FRGs get under threat, they never launch any kind of shuttle as suggested, so the entire secondary goal stack cannot be completed. The Avenger and assorted missile boats do not show up until you destroy one of the FRGs. After the missile boats appear, they lawn-dawn themselves straight into the side of the remaining FRG, leaving you and whatever wingmen you’ve got around to destroy it with lasers.

I finally gave up getting any kind of decent score on this one.

Junk mission, and pretty much a waste of time. It really takes longer to install than it does to fly it. Destroy three MUTRs with ordnance... done. I flew it with EHSP installed as indicated, and it seems like to the first MUTR was destroyed by proximity to the SSD, so it's also potentially bugged. SSD has fighter orders. The only redeeming quality here is the free FCHG point.

This is a competent mission whether you're playing for points, or whether you're score-hunting. There are numerous bonus objectives, leading to stratifying performance on the mission, so it's decent for any competitions involving score. The overall mission design is acceptable - there is a basic plot, some enemy cruisers, and plenty of assorted fighters to mop up. On the cons, the fighter objectives for both friendly and enemy are pretty haphazard, resulting in bombers attacking fighters and fighters attacking capitals. It's all a bit random. The other major drawback is time - it's not quick, especially if you keep going past the primary goals in order to rack up points. It's probably acceptable length if just playing to the primary objective, though.

This is an acceptable mission to complete for points. There is a plot... sort-of. However, the plot and shuttle are effectively meaningless because the enemy fighters ignore it entirely. Ultimately it's just mopping up some waves of rebel fighters. You're in a T/D with beam, aka. extra power. Pretty typical mission for its vintage. If you're going for score, send your wingmen home - they won't be needed.

This was an acceptable mission to complete for points. There's nothing overly spectacular about it, but nothing overly problematic either. It is very easy to complete, even on Hard difficulty. Overall, it's about as expected considering its age (released in 1995). Simply shoot up a few waves of rebel fighters and take out two corvettes. Send your wingmen home if you're trying to maximize your score.

On the plus side, this mission at least starts out with a plot. However, the implementation really isn't very polished. Most of the craft have implausible and poorly designed orders; from the Escort Shuttles just sitting there, the friendly ISD doing nothing, to the extra fighters flying circles. It's flyable and can be completed easily, but unfortunately it's nothing very impressive. 2 points.

I'm not generally a huge fan of missile boat missions, but for a free mission this one was pretty good. It was obvious that the designer put some thought and effort into the design of the mission, and the end result shows it. This one is worth flying.
