This is a pretty good firefight, it requires both piloting skill and some sense of tactics. On Hard, it's definitely a challenge, but it's not impossibly difficult like a lot of XvT missions.
The dogfighting, while beyond the "fun" point and into the realm of tedium, isn't the bad part. I've survived a lot worse. However, unless you can shoot down a Y-Wing at exactly 1.8 km, you can expect to spend a long time trying to get a good score on this mission on Hard while attempting to keep the Y-Wings from firing exactly enough rockets to destroy your frigate.
Yeah, this was pretty challenging, but unfortunately it often forces the player to solo enemy capships -- not at all a good thing in XWA. In two missions an A/FRG tears up the Immortal (?) and in the last mission the SSD seemed to do jack diddly against the remaining enemy capships (!). Adjust/rebalance those parts and I'll give it a 4.
Sorry, but Mission 5 really bites the big one. At least half the enemy fighters couldn't be bothered to fire at me while I sat at zero throttle, slowly chipping away at each capship's shield and hull values.
One of my favorite EH Battles, and based off actual World War II battles (if you bother to read the end of the plotline file). It's good to climb back into the old T/B or GUN once in a while and fight in an actual, realistic combat engagement (where both sides don't throw out billions/trillions of credits' worth of hardware at each combat engagement :-P).
If you want an easy, fun, and well-balanced battle, here you go! The only reason I don't give this a 5 is the lack of breakpoints in map briefings and the "HOW many times have the Missile Boat plans been stolen?!" syndrome.
Excellent Battle. I think this captures the spirit of the original XWA missions: a personal story set against an epic background. Not that this story is really that sentimental or anything, but you just have to grin when, during the final assault on the enemy base, the transports capture the Corvette designated for your reward. Lots and lots of Flight Groups in each mission, all performing intricate tasks. The only reason I give the Battle a 4 is because of the sometimes messy pre-mission briefings and hangar weapons selection. Other than that, this Battle's great :-)
In actuality I would probably give this CAB a 3.5. In the beginning it's pretty repetitive, but as you near the end of the campaign it's as if the designer got a sudden burst of inspiration, as the Republic deploys a new supership and you wage a campaign to destroy it. Overall an okay Battle.
This is a fun battle, with a lot of Rebel capital ships and installations to take out. However, I can't give this a 4 or 5, mainly because of shoddy execution at times (radio chatter popping up when it isn't supposed to, etc.) and the play balance is a bit out of whack at times (mission 4, come on DOWN! :-P). All in all, however, this a battle you'll want to fly if you haven't already.
This free mission is a simulation of the Battle of Yavin, in case you didn't know. It's not a perfect simulation, but only because 1) you pretty much HAVE to use the asteroid facility for the Death Star and 2) it's balanced so the Empire can actually win and have some fun doing it. This is also an excellent example of how a TIE Fighter mission can be balanced. Too many missions put you in a single T/F and expect you to take out a squadron of A-Wings. However, the battle against the X-Wings and Y-Wings is decent. And he's my CMDR too :-P
I, for one, enjoyed this battle. It can be seen some effort was put into the design and it's not a rehash of "take out half a wing of Rebels and go home". I must admit that the end of the last mission sort of left me scratching my head, because it left a lot of plot questions unanswered that could have been resolved with a couple more missions...
