Golden tugs 2005: best TIE free mission of 2004

Battle Reviews

On the merits of the mission itself, it's likely more of a 2 or 3, depending on how you rank harmless, fairly simple and relatively easy missions. However! This is a replication of the TIE Fighter demo - one I absolutely adored and played the heck out of many, many times. It's a perfect replica, and for that I must give it the highest marks, even if only because it let me relive those fond memories of playing the heck out of that demo.

I have to disagree with the others here. Ender reproduced the mission in as close to the original format as he could manage - the TIE demo was in fact an upgraded version of X-Wing, lacking many features in the original TIE game. He's done a great job with what he had available.

What can I say? A shining example of how NOT to use global goals...

Good Mission not too hard , well put together. A little long to finish all goals but all in all a good mission to test endurance and your T/F Skills.

I agree with Gunman on this one. I'm all for nostalgia, but this mission is CRAP. It's not even because of the endless waves of A-Wings (I actually enjoyed the challenge), but the whole mission makes no sense at all. First you destroy a defenseless heap of rebel stuff and then, they send the strangest reinforcements... an Y-Wing here, an X-Wing there, but no organized counterattack. The weirdest thing is the freighters and shuttles popping up and then just sitting there, what the hell's the point of that? The mission is also far too long and boring until you've blown everything to dust. This mission might be a classic and all, but it's also one of the worst missions I've ever seen. Why did you have to bring it back, oh why? :P

Well, mission is damn easy, but idea is pretty cool. However, entire base is standing still, no tugs or TRNs to repair fighters. Also. A-Ws Rogue arrive one by one, that's really annoying. With a few changes it could be a lot better.

OMG... This mission is an outstanding example, why flying a shieldless T/F against A/Ws with Missiles is frustrating. Still, after reflying it several times (SSL 2005 playoffs), I really start to even LIKE this one... Still, there could be at least few A/Ws less...

Considering that this is the TIE Fighter demo mission, I thought it was interesting. The A-wings were really easy, but believe me, they get harder. This level has to probably be played several times to be fully appreciated, as the craft get harder as you get deeper into the mission. I made it past the primary and secondary goals only to be shot down by an A-wing with their missile. That seems to perpetually spell death for a TIE Fighter. :P I recommend it. It's official Star Wars canon!

I'm having trouble describing how bad this mission is. Some things just don't deserve to be remembered.

Description
-----------
This mission is the elusive "TIE Demo" mission, that was part of the flyable demo of
TIE Fighter and is in fact the first TIE mission ever made, but also in storyline:
It happens just before the first mission of Battle 1 (and the Battle of Hoth) and is
Mareek Stele's first actual combat mission. All official TIE Fighter missions are part
of the Emperor's Hammer History and this would be the earliest bit.

The Demo actually uses a mix between the X-Wing and the TIE Fighter mission formats:
It has the 48 possible flightgroups of TIE, but like X-Wing it has no included briefing
and it uses a craft slotlist that is closer to that of X-Wing as well - also only
using craft that are in X-Wing: this means this mission can be flown in any TIE version
because they all have more craft types.

Using hex editting I've ported the demo mission completely to the final TIE Fighter mission
format. To finish it off I've added a full modern day animated briefing (the demo doesn't
have one). Besides the briefing this is a complete port, with all the same craft on the same
locations doing the same things. Giving you all the chance to play it (again) in better
quality (TIECD/95).

For the Glory of the Empire!

NOTE
-------------------
This mission should work for all versions of TIE Fighter.
DO NOT VIEW OR EDIT THIS MISSION WITH TIE FIGHTER MISSION EDITORS!
(They all have a bug in orders that I had to fix using a Hexeditor)

MISSION LOG:
------------

We are all tremendously excited about the upcoming attack.
The Rebels main base has been discovered on the ice planet Hoth. A
huge assault force is being sent to destroy it. Our role will be
to support the attack by preparing an ambush for any Rebels that
manage to escape their doom on Hoth. We are being sent to the
Remitik system to destroy a small repair yard there and wait for
the Rebel vermin to bolt from their holes.

Our starfighters are to be launched from Assassin-class
Corvettes because all of the large capital ships in the sector are
being used at Hoth. This will be my first real combat mission as
a TIE Fighter pilot. No more simulators!
To the glory of the Empire!

MISSION BRIEFING:
-----------------

for TIE Fighter Group Alpha

Your flight will be responsible for eliminating any opposition
at the Rebel repair yard near Remitik. In the absence of any
active defense you will assist in the destruction of the repair
yard. This is to prepare for an ambush of any ships escaping
the attack on Hoth. As Rebel ships enter the area you are to
engage and destroy them. Take no prisoners! Good Hunting!

Primary Win Condition:
----------------------

Destruction of Rebel repair yard and all disabled craft in the area.

Secondary Win Condition:
------------------------

Destruction of all entering Rebel craft except A-wing Rogue.

Bonus Win Condition:
--------------------

Destruction of A-wing Rogue.

COCKPIT INSTRUMENTATION:
------------------------

Target Tracking Display. The TTD is the main screen at the
bottom of the forward cockpit view. [O, R, T, U and Y keys]

Immediately above it are an Engine Power Percentage Indicator,
three Threat Warning Lights (duplicated above the gunsight's targeting
box) and a Speed Indicator.

Above these are the right and left Laser Energy Level indicators.

In the lower left is a Hull Integrity Display.

Along the middle left is the Laser Energy Recharge Rate indicator,
and above it is the Mission Elapsed Time Clock.

Along the right is Engine Energy Level indicator, and above it is
the Flight Recorder Display (on/off light and frames remaining.)

In the upper corners are a Forward (on the left) and Rear (right)
Sensor Display. The dots indicate other craft. They are color coded:
red for Imperial, green for Rebel, and yellow for missiles and torpedoes.
The brightness of the dot is also an indication of the distance (near -
bright, far - faint.) The dot representing whatever is targeted in the TTD
will have white brackets around it.

A BRIEF NOTE ON TACTICS:
------------------------

TIE Fighters have no shields! The hull can only withstand a few hits.
Watch out for friendly fire. Although, it is certainly effective to gang up
on a single target to overwhelm it, there is great risk involved. Avoid flying
between a wingman and his target. Keep an eye on the Laser Energy Level,
the brighter green that indicates "turboblast" strength will dissipate quickly
with constant fire. Be sure to set your recharge rate at maximum whenever
you can.

A HINT FOR WINNING THE MISSION:
-------------------------------

Keep an eye out for the Rebel Freighters. They don't stay for long, so you
have to get them quickly.
