In the year 2023, you have three options for how to play this battle:
1) X-Wing Disk using the E-Wing patch for X-Wing Disk
2) X-Wing CD using the E-Wing patch for X-Wing CD
3) No patch, platform of your choice (probably X-Wing 95)
Anyone looking to play this battle in 2023 onwards should go with option (3), but this battle is intended for option (2). The E-Wing patch for X-Wing Disk made cosmetic changes but didn't do much for functionality. The E-Wing patch for X-Wing CD didn't have the cosmetic changes, but DID have functionality changes (a three-pronged turbo-charged laser). Unfortunately, it inadvertently makes ALL ships have that turbo-charged feature, which is arguably a hack.
I thought it was pretty cool when I came across it on the internet in the nineties, and it's what first alerted me to the Emperor's Hammer as a club, so I'm grateful for that. It motivated me to try to run it for nostalgia sake twenty five years later. But to say it hasn't aged well is a wild understatement.
In interest of fairness, I flipped this patch on for the E-Wing missions (which are specifically designed for it) and flipped it off for the regular missions. I still would have been much, much better off ignoring it entirely, and recommend any one looking at this now to do the same.
Otherwise, it's an OK battle. It would be better if it didn't use the E-Wings, particularly because they're only used for 2 of the 6 missions. Those missions will be a bit tougher without the supercharged turbo laser, but by no means insurmountable.

That's a mediocre battle that for most of its part suffers the 'grand battle' syndrome. I think only the first two missions were more tactical in their approach, even though like the rest of them it was just 'wipe them all out'. This battle requires the E-Wing patch, which is serious pain in the back to install on new systems. I have X-Wing from steam and the only version I managed to get it working for, was the DOS version. Patching the remastered version worked in theory but the game crashed shortly after the mission start. I probably spent more time patching than playing. It does not affect the battle's score though, but until X-Wing patches are integrated into EH patcher, feel free to sit this one out.

Installation: ---------------------- note: the original mission files will be overwritten, back up any files with the same names. X-Wing CD Installation: 1. Download and install XCD from the SCO Site (http://sco.minos.net), files archive, the edittors section. (6k.) This will let you run custom missions. There is a full guide available at the SCO site as well. 2. Put the *.BRF and *.XWI files in your new "C:\Mission" folder and use XCD to start X-Wing CD. Create a new pilot based on your pin and the battle's type and name. For example: 2883tc01.plt if I would be flying the first XW-TC battle. 3. Fly the first 6 "Historical" missions. X-Wing 95/Disk Installation: 1. Run full install of the game so the mission files will be on your hard drive. The game will take it's mission information by preference from the harddisc, but might still give a warning. In that case - Ignore. 2. Locate your X-W Directory and open the folder labeled "Mission", or "Classic" in X-W95. Copy the *.xwi, *.brf files of this custom battle into it. 3. Create a new pilot based on your pin and the battle's type and name. For example: 2883tc01.plt if I would be flying the first XW-TC battle. 4. Fly the first 6 "Historical" missions. INFILTRATOR WING BATTLE 15 PLOTLINE Approved by IW Tactical Office 11-17-98 BATTLE NAME: Lyccos Doom - The Blasted Landscapes AUTHOR: IWTAC/EM Proton (proton2001@hotmail.com) TYPE (Battle, part one of a three-battle campaign series): MEDAL: Trial of Fire # OF MISSIONS: 6 GALAXY BITMAP (Y/N): No BRIEFING MAPS (Y/N): Yes BATTLE SUMMARY: The Lyccos star, a quickly expanding red giant, has boiled life from the surface of its planets, Lyccos I and Lyccos II. Fifteen million sentient beings claw a harsh existence from 29 massive "cavern states" beneath the surface of Lyccos II. The star will go nova within two millenia - plenty of time for Imperial forces to wrest control of the lawless planet and strip the system of useful raw materials. Emperor's Hammer high command has ordered the Infiltrator Wing to accomplish strategic and tactical dominance of Lyccos II. This campaign far from Imperial-controlled space is a daring expansion of Imperial might. We will not fail. CONTINUITY NOTE: This battle and its subsequent two battles are set in the time period of the aftermath of IW operations vs. the Rebel Squadrons in progress as of June 1998. FILES NEEDED, ETC.: This X-Wing battle uses the E-wing ship, replacing the X-wing. Download the required files to run E-wing from the Emperors Hammer (www.emperorshammer.org) or Infiltrator Wing (www.infiltratorwing.org) domain pages. IW craft fly under the green IFF in this battle, to sow confusion among the Minos Outlaws, whose ships appear with the red and blue IFF displays. MISSION 1 INFO: Shadow Squadron from the IW flagship MC-90 Bismarck has been ordered to test the readiness and strength of a typical Lyccosian outpost. An outpost on the edge of the system has been chosen so as not to draw too much attention in this recon mission. This refueling and minor repair post is run by Sullustan and Twi'lek organized crime elements who hail from one of the corruption-infested "cavern states" beneath the surface of Lyccos II. BRIEFING: Two Shadow Y-wings escorted by one A-wing will emerge from hyperspace immediately adjacent to the outpost. The Y-wings must destroy the post's comsat before the criminals can send a detailed report to Lyccos II orbital stations. All outpost facilities then must be inspected and destroyed. Any defense craft must be engaged and destroyed as well. Nothing larger than a grain of space dust must be left when you hyper out of the system, Shadow leader. SHIP USED: Y-wing Shadow (3), A-wing Shadow (1); FRT Stage 5 (4), CON Stage 5 (1), SHU Larceny (4), Y-wing Crawler (1), GUN Deathpike (2), Y-wing Stave (4) A-wing Green (2) GOALS: Destroy comsat and all Lyccosian outpost craft MISSION 2 INFO: M/FRG Imperator, a decommissioned EH ship on loan to the IW for this campaign, has been deployed near an intersystem shipping point used by the "Cavern 21" crime cartel whose repair outpost we destroyed last mission. The Imperator will launch a series of strikes against similar cartel holdings in preparation for the annihilation of all significant space forces used by the major Lyccos II cavern states. BRIEFING: E-wings from White Squadron are flying security while awaiting the launching of Enforcer Squadron's B-wings to blast the shipping port's station and docking CRVs. White Squadron and a flight of A-wings from Intruder Squadron will escort the mission. SHIP USED: E-wing White (3), B-wing Enforcer (3), A-wing Intruder (3), M/FRG (FRG) Imperator; FRT Station 32 (4), CRV Sullust Yaw (3), CRV Twi'Lek Sun (3), T/F Sentry (2), FRG Clawhook, FRG Whip, FRG Whipsaw GOALS: Destroy FRTs, CRVs, T/Fs, MISSION 3 INFO: The Minos Outlaws of Lyccos II have shown their hand and it cost us one of our capital ships. The Intelligence Division believes the appearance of three top-line frigates at the supply station means the criminal syndicates that rule the Lyccosian subsurface cavern states have been engaged in a clandestine military buildup, to either defend their planetary operations or even expand into other nearby systems of the lawless Minos Cluster. We have a fight on our hands. Let's get to it. BRIEFING: MC-90 Bismarck and its forces will attack a key space blockade erected by the Outlaws. Emboldened by their destruction of the Imperator, the Outlaws are deploying aggressor forces that may even pose a threat to the Bismarck. As a consequence, the MC-80b Saratoga is en route to bring the battle to a new level of IW firepower. Bismarck squadrons will break through the corvettes blockade and kill the two frigates that just entered the area in support. SHIP USED: B-wing Vulture (3), Y-wing Shadow (3), E-wing White (3), A-wing Crimson (3), MC-90 Bismarck, MC-80b Saratoga, E-wing Black (3); CRV Deathblast (4), CRV Crucible (3), FRG Supernova, FRG Gatti, T/B Stiletto (3) GOALS: Destroy all enemy craft, Saratoga must arrive MISSION 4 INFO: The Saratoga and Bismarck commanders are conferring aboard executive SHUs to the planning of attacks on major Minos Outlaws assets in the vicinity of Lyccos II. But the IW task force has been jumped and the command craft are in peril. Protect their return to the capital ships! BRIEFING: E-wing Black is the principle escort for the SHU meeting. You must ensure the safe return of our high command to their ships; any other outcome would be a crippling blow to our campaign and EH high command would surely recall our task force in ignominy. The success of the Minos Outlaws campaign rests on your shoulders, E-W Black leader! SHIP USED: E-wing Black (3), E-wing White (3), A-wing Silver (3), MC-90 Bismarck, MC-80b Saratoga, SHU Mustang, SHU Corona, SHU Logistics (2); T/F Intrude (6), T/I Unbidden (6), T/B Torrid (2), FRG Notorious, CRV Underground (6) GOALS: SHUs Mustang and Corona must complete mission; enemy starfighters and corvettes must be destroyed. MISSION 5 INFO: The Minos Outlaws have captured two of our support crew ships and are placing mines around the ships. Intercepted radio transmissions indicate the crew members are being tortured! In an emergency mission, IW squadrons will clear the mines and destroy the captured ships before our unfortunate Imperial colleagues give up our campaign secrets. BRIEFING: Y-wing Shadow will clear the mines and help B-wing Vulture punch through the Outlaws' defenses and eliminate our hapless crew ships and an Outlaws interrogators' craft. A-wing Silver will fly cover against any enemy starfighters. SHIP USED: Y-wing Shadow (3), B-wing Vulture (2), A-wing Silver (2), E-wing White (3), FRT IW Support (2); CRV Pliers, CRV Bludgeon (3), T/F Replete (4), T/F Grater (4), T/I Contour (4), mines GOALS: Destroy all enemy craft, destroy FRT IW Support, destroy mines MISSION 6 INFO: After being forced to kill some of our own logistical personnel in the previous mission, the men and women of Infiltrator Wing are in no mood to extend any mercy to the bloodless Minos Outlaws. In this mission, the full might of the IW will be employed to obliterate the Outlaws' amassed forces near Lyccos II. BRIEFING: Four frigates and two cruisers plus their defense forces are to be destroyed in one overwhelming assault. After this victory, IW forces will have achieved superiority in the Lyccos II space archipelago and the looting of the planet and the elimination of the criminal organizations' cavern states can begin. SHIP USED: B-wing Enforcer (3), Y-wing Shadow (3), A-wing Intruder (3), MC-90 Bismarck, MC-80b Saratoga, E-wing Black (3), FRG Ocelot, FRG Esperance, FRG New Enmity, FRG Unholy, CRS Minos Gold, CRS Outlaw Zone, T/A Bolt (2), T/F Infight (3), T/B Sever (4) GOALS: Destroy all enemy capital ships EM Proton, October 1998 THESE LEVELS ARE NOT MADE, DISTRIBUTED, OR SUPPORTED BY LUCASARTS ENTERTAINMENT COMPANY, ELEMENTS TM & (C) LUCASARTS ENTERTAINMENT COMPANY
