Battle Reviews

The story was there, but it didn't capture my interests and I did not like it depicting the TIE Corps and EH torturing prisoners. The missions themselves were sometimes tricky but mostly straightforward. If it wasn't for the torture this would have been a 3

I played on Easy with cheats. Even with unlimited ammo, many of these missions are a slog. I can only imagine how rough they are with one payload of warheads. The final mission, especially, is just littered with capital ships that are all 10km+ away from each other.

As stated by others, it frequently crashes during briefings, so you have to skip them which is very annoying. Otherwise, I didn't mind this one as much as others. The first few missions were fun and of reasonable length, but by the last two it started to get a bit tedious being in an assault gunboat for so long (and the last two were about twice as long as they needed to be, as well).

Cumbersome gunboat missions that have you grind down cap ships. Two missions are nearly identical. Crashes on mission briefings. Don't play it.

Poor choice of player's craft diminished this otherwise promising battle. Flying a GUN or a T/B can be some fun from time to time, but being the sole gunship against endless waves of A-Wings and X-Wings, while bombing more than 10 capital ships with one payload of warheads, is just folly. If it had a bit more of cleverer planning, and a more balanced set of player craft vs enemies, this could have been a good battle, but ends up being a tedious and unrealistic as if it was planned for playing with unlimited warheads cheat, and that is a no-no. Too bad.

Every Ender battle has at least one clever design moment, and that's true of this battle. However, I was frustrated by the GUN and the long distance between the player drop point and the targets in most missions. Chasing the SHU in the first and second mission was a fun challenge, but after that it became tedious. I know the GUN is integral to the story of Krayt Squadron, but I wonder if the targets had to be spaced so far away.

This battle was certainly not bad, but it was quite difficult. It did feel a lot longer than it was, but it flowed well, and you truly did feel a sense of accomplishment after completing each mission. I only give it a four out of five because it was so hard, and because again, it felt a lot longer than it was.

Battle requires Modified Strike Cruiser and M/FRT The Luggage patches but this is not stated in the compendium. Mission 1: Enemy FRGs do not attack the M/FRT Luggage even when it is firing on them. Mission 2: If the Rebel Captain is killed before reaching the R&D FC asteroid, the in-flight message stating the captain's shuttle is fleeing said base still appears - despite the shuttle already being destroyed and thus not able to appear later at the R&D asteroid. Mission 4: Message about 50% of the target convoy being destroyed only appears when 75% has been eliminated (due to an error with the two new corvettes jumping in later). Craft selection in the hangar does not work - only the Assault Gunboat is actually selectable. Mission 5: Republic M/FRG Loyalty has trouble hitting the A/FRG Intruder. CRS Justice has trouble hitting the VSD Gilded Claw.

Original Battle Story
---------------------

[View Plotline.txt for the new story and craft assignments.]

In X-Wing vs. TIE Fighter, the "Heavy Assault" part of missions flying
is mostly given to the Rebels. The Imperials are left with just two 8
player CO-OP Training Missions. I converted the Rebel 8 player missions
to Imperial 8 Player Missions. But I didn't just change the sides, I
also adapted the Craft types, Options, Mission Goals etc. etc. to make
them harder and more variable and esp. more directed to Krayt Squadron
and the TIE corps in general. The First Mission is an elaborate edit
of an old TIE Fighter Mission.

[Randomise] will offer you many different missions for when you have
"done" the basic versions. All craft and squadrons "exsist" in the
Emperor's Hammer, Rebel Squadrons or Renegade Wing.

krayt1.tie Description

while Flight 2 will teach both factions not to mess around with the
Empire by destroying their Fighter Carriers.
[Randomise On] will change the Capital Ships and all enemy fighters.
Imperial Players: Assault Gunboats (8)

krayt2.tie Description
----------------------
Krayt Squadron has been given the easy task of taking out an Calamari
Cruiser with just their Assault Gunboats. Flight 1 is to destroy the
fighter defences, while Flight 2 is to destroy the Cruiser and its
support craft.
[Randomise On] will have effect on the Cruiser and the support Craft.
Imperial Players: Assault Gunboat (8)

krayt3.tie Description
----------------------
The Corvette Tantive IX, transporting Rebel Alliance leaders, has been
located docked in the loading bay of the Calamari Cruiser Liberty. Help
Krayt forces in a daring Special Opps Mission to capture this Corvette
and destroy their comrades by leading an assault on the CRS.
[Randomise On] will change Capital Ships and Z95 Headhunters.
Imperial Players:
Flight 1 Krayt Squadron (Attack/Escort) -Assault Gunboat (2), TIE Advanced (2)
Flight 2 Krayt Squadron (Attack/Disable) - Assault Gunboat (4)

krayt4.tie Description
----------------------
Asp scouts have located a large Rebel convoy which is relatively
undefended. To inflict as much damage to the Rebellion as possible,
destroy the entire convoy of Corellian Corvettes before they make it
to their hyperspace point.
[Randomise On] will have effect on the Convoy.
Imperial Players: Assault Gunboat (8)

krayt5.tie Description
----------------------
While returning from a mission in Rebel territory, the Interdictor
Spot o'Glue was sabotaged by Rebel Spies. Its gravity well projectors
are no longer able to switch off, making it impossible for the ISD
Intrepid, that was escorting the Spot o'Glue, to hyper . Now the rebels
have arrived to take advantage of the situation - High Command has
decided to evacuate and destroy the Spot o'Glue before the Fleet also
loses the Intrepid.
[Randomise On] will have effect on the Capital Ships.
Imperial Players: Assault Gunboat (4), TIE Advanced (4)

- version 2:
The first version was released as my first battle ever, and made to train Krayt
Pilots in co-op bombing missions. The Battle was submitted for the first "ASF:
Supremacy Competition" of may 2000 and then held up in testing for one and a half
years before being released w/o any changes.

In 2002 This battle earned the "Pinky Lollypop" for being the Worst XvT Battle of 2001,
which was weird (as it rated two times as high as the other choice, and was from 2000)
but fairly to be expected for a first made battle, one that was made in for Co-Op in a
SP environment and all that.

This second release is aimed at pleasing the comments made about this battle over the
past 3 years. It features an actual storyline, is no longer a collection of converted
Totally Games rebel missions. The Co-Op element stayed, as that's finally started to pick
up in the TC, but the battle has been made easier for the Single Player Pilot.

All the craft of the original missions are there, doing about the same things - just
done up to avoid bugs and to look better. I've also added things that were planned
originally already, but were't possible then - like the Luggage Patch.

As George Lucas once said: "A movie is never finished, only abandoned"

- version 3:
Because of the lack of new XWA battles, the CA:TAC Styles ported these missions to XWA for me.
The port actually needed a lot more then just Allied porting them, mostly because the XvT
version was set up for 2 flyable teams of 4 players each and XWA doesn't support that, but
other "upgrades" have been added too.

Wing XIV: Krayt Squadron
"Krayt Squadron Training"

Featuring: The crew of Krayt Squadron of 2002, under the Command of CM Frodo March.
Guest Stars: "Heroes of Krayt", the people that started in Krayt and went on to
greatness, like FO/FA Cyric, former COO/VA Khadgar, WC/MAJ Nightmare, CMDR/COL jdf1984,
CMDR/LC CTXclr and.. SCO/FA Ender mBind.

This battle uses the original fighter set up of Krayt Squadron.

Introduction:
-------------
Krayt Squadron, 52nd TIE Corps Squadron, of Wing XIV is based upon the ISDII Intrepid
and its objective is Heavy Assault. Heavy Assault Squadrons assault and assist in capture
of heavily defended objectives, but if they can NOT perform their primary objectives
(i.e. assist in capture) then they are to DESTROY their target[s].

Krayt Squadron is currently under the command of CPT SavageAz and earlier CMDRs were
LC CrimsonFury (who remained CMDR for over a year) CM Frodo March (former ISDII Intrepid Commodore), CPT Phantom (former Wing XIV Commander), CPT Nightmare (former Wing XV Commander, now Avenger elite
CMDR), CPT Falcon (Former ISDII Subjugator Comodore), CPT CTXclr, LC jdf1984, CM Maverick, AD Cyric
(former ASFCOM, now FO) and CPT TIEBOMBER.

Krayt Squadron came out as the top Intrepid squadron in the first and fourth ASF:SC and it has won
WC's Own a few times too. Apparently its a breeding ground for ASF Flagstaff, at times
over half the ASF Staff had started here.

Krayt Squadron currently holds 386 Squadron Citations.

Mission 1:
----------
Some elements in every society will never succumb to a ruler that's not one of their own,
how benign that rule might be. The Intelligence Division has been monitoring two of these
separatist groups within the Emperor's Hammer, one from the Pyrath System and one of the
Heir System, and has found out that they are planning to ally themselves against the Strike
Fleet.

Spies within both groups have delivered us the time and location of an high level meeting
between the two groups - one which we will use for a double mission: Krayt Flight 1 will
support transports from Turtle Squadron in their mission to capture the leaders of both
teams while Flights 2 and 3 will strike the enemy star ships and generally cause the
separatists as much damage as they can.

[Randomise On] will change the Capital Ships and all enemy fighters.
Imperial Players: Assault Gunboats (6) and TIE Bombers (2)

Mission 2:
----------
The Pyrath convoy we encountered on our last mission was carrying military grade ammunitions
- something which they could only have gotten from either the Empire or the New Republic.

Interrogation of the Pyrath leaders we captured quickly pointed out that they came from a
New Republic source: a fortified supply base in an asteroid field near Pyrath. It also
became clear that the NR liaison in this case is the Captain of a Calamari cruiser
stationed at this base.

Krayt Squadron has been given the easy task of taking out this Calamari Cruiser with just
their Assault Gunboats. Flight 1 is to destroy the fighter defences, while Flight 2 is to
destroy the Cruiser and its support craft. You are free to damage the base as much as you
can - but the Calamari Cruiser's Captain is our main goal.

[Randomise On] will change the Capital Ships and all enemy fighters.
Imperial Players: Assault Gunboats (6) and TIE Bombers (2)

Mission 3:
----------
The captured Heir and Pyrath leaders might not have all survived interrogation, but they
have been useful indeed. It seems that the warheads that the Cruiser was loading up on at
that asteroid base were manufactured close by - and that they weren't very standard either.

Apparently these warheads have some sort of shield-disruption device that makes them
penetrate shields more quickly then regular torpedoes do. As you can understand, the SCO
is very interested in obtaining that technique for the Emperor's Hammer - which requires
us to kidnap some of the scientists that designed the device.

The Corvette Tantive IX, transporting these Rebel Scientists, has been located docked in
the loading bay of the Calamari Cruiser Liberty near the Factory that makes the warheads.
Krayt is sent in to capture this CRC and destroy the CRS.

[Randomise On] will change the Capital Ships and all enemy fighters.
Imperial Players: Assault Gunboats (8), and TIE Bombers (4)

Mission 4:
----------
Interrogation of the captured Rebel Scientists is still in full swing aboard the ISD
Intrepid, COM/VA Brakka is having a wonderful time, but one thing we were already able to
extract from them: that in fact our assault was too late, as their corvette was the last
one of a large convoy that had just left the factory. The New Republic had noticed our
interest in the project and had decided to move it somewhere else.

However, by taking a shortcut through the Minos Cluster we will be able to catch up on the
convoy at a known hyper point, where we will utterly destroy it. All of this to avoid the
project being continued by the rebellion and to put extra pressure on the Scientists.

[Randomise On] will change the Capital Ships and all enemy fighters.
Imperial Players: Assault Gunboats (8) and TIE Bombers (4)

Mission 5:
----------
Under VA Brakka's capable hands (and pliers, and blowtorches) the Rebel Scientists we
captured sung like birds, which means its time to hand them over to the Fleet's Science
Officer on the SSSD Sovereign.

While on course to Aurora however, the ISDII Intrepid has been pulled out of hyperspace
by a Modified Strike Cruiser into what seems to be a carefully laid out trap, right on a
NR fleet. The Fleet Commander has already given us an ultimatum to return the Scientists
or we will have to face "More hell then you can imagine!".

Now we Imperials have quite an imagination, so we have decided to leg it before more forces
arrive... after Krayt has taken care of that Modified Strike Cruiser.

[Randomise On] will change the Capital Ships and all enemy fighters.
Imperial Players: Assault Gunboats (8) and TIE Bombers (4)
