Battle Reviews

This was just a basic mission with some patches. The story didn't feel that special and the combat was a bit boring.

This battle is a quick an mostly easy introduction to the V-Wing fighter. I have flown the V-Wing in TIE Fighter and XvT (I think?), but this felt like a proper introduction to the fighter. It would have been nice to have a final battle where you actually put the V-Wing through its paces.

Short battle, but... interesting. Very tricky.

This is the best version of the V-wing battle due to the xwa features in my opinion.

Battle Bug Reports

COL Phalk Sturm

2020-12-11

Mission 3 is impossible to accomplish. Only 2 of the 3 supposed capital ships are present. 2 CRKCs but no sign of the DREAD. I waited for over 40 minutes (twice) using either the V-W, or the T/A at the same frustrating result. Changing difficulty levels and other craft has the same bug. No DREAD appears

The V-Wings don't show up in mission 1 (I think they are supposed to) or mission 2 (after which, I'm stuck). I have the V-wing and Dreadnaught patch installed.

Battle will not launch and crashes XWA when "go to hangar" button is clicked.

Battle requires the Dreadnaught Mark I Patch, which is not stated in the Compendium or Readme!

Maybe I'm crazy:

Mission 3: Must destroy 100% of all capital ships. Only two Carrack Cruisers appear, not a third ship.

Requires V-Wing patch but this is not clearly stated in the mission compendium.

Installation
------------
The Mission.lst replaces your original file, so back that up!

0] Make sure you have the V-Wing and S-Foils patches for XWA installed from the SCO site (currently: http://sco.minos.net)
1] Double click the .EHM file, the EH Battle Launcher will install the battle.
2] Check the Misc folder in your XWA one for additional material like patches, sounds etc.
3] In EHBL, create a new "EH Pilot" in the Game Menu (Check "Prepare for EH Battle") based
on your name or PIN and the mission number. For example, SL Stele playing Free Mission 80
would make a new pilot file named "StelFM80." or a Pilot with PIN 2883 playing Free Mission
69 would make a new pilot file named "2883fm69"
4] Press the X-Wing Alliance button to start XWA and fly the battle.

Story Line
----------

Mission 1:
After a major power surge, many of the ISDII Relentless' critical systems have gone offline. This
places the ISDII Relentless in a very bad position so the M/FRG Fogger is on its way to repair it.
You are to protect both the ISDII Relentless and the M/FRG Fogger during this operation.
In other news, we have gained information that Rebels have made an advanced, spacegoing, version of
their V-Wing airspeeders. Be on the lookout for any of these.

Mission 2:
As Intel had suspected, the new V-Wing version was used in the assault on the ISDII Relentless. This
new craft looks just like the old V-Wing, and our scanners will pick it up as such. They have new
"V-class" engines, and are also shielded. Be alerted!
The Science Office would very much like to take a closer look at these new craft, so you are to scout
the sector for any rebel V-wings, and if any are encountered, to capture them. Especially the
Infiltrator Wing could do very well using them.

Mission 3:
Tracing the hyperspace lines of the Rebels in the previous mission, we think we have located the source
of the recent rebel incursions: A Rebel Dreadnaught hiding in a small asteroid field near by. This
Dreadnaught Master and its two escorting Carrack Cruisers from flightgroup Disser must be destroyed.
Using standard V-Wings, the Science Office has been able to whip up some of these new V-Wings and this
assault would be a good chance to check them out. In case these protypes fail in some way we have M
issile Boats and TIE Advanced flying along.

Mission 4:
The Science Office research on the V-Wings is complete. While still not particulary well armed, it is
quite fast and well protected. However the shield generator and hyperdrive are both quite complicated
and expensive. We suspect that the production version will lack these features.
It also appears that they have an extremely long range hyperdrive, and we have decided to make good
use of this unexpected ability. Using this special hyperdrive, you will attack a rebel training
platform deep inside New Republic space, and completely destroy it.

NOTE
-------------------
You need XWA (or at least all the ships involved there) AND the V-W for XWA.

Other Information
-----------------
When I was doing Project Shield part of the work was removing unneeded and/or outdated patches,
but TIE-TC#39 came with one I had never seen before: the V-Wing. As the battle was released in 1996,
that made it the earliest reference to this craft ever. However, the patch had been disabled
by an earlier TAC project (Probably because it only worked on the TIECD version and had only very
limited changes to the craft it replaced) so I removed it from the battle and stored it for future
reference.

A year later I completed the V-Wing OPT (and cockpits) and rebuilt the patch for both TIECD and TIE95
using the original stats by Micck Emrys (almost, i removed the standard shields and hyperdrive.) so
I wanted to re-enable the patch in TIE-TC#39 (by just changing the craft type really.)

It was then that I actually first laid eyes on the battle - and was shocked to see how much had changed
in missioncreation since 1996: It had virtually no radiomessages, waypoints or briefings and even still
included parts of text from the original TIE Fighter mission it was based upon.

At this point I asked permission from the Tactical Office to upgrade the battle completely to
current standards while re-adding the patch. Because I was working on it anyway I decided I may
as well port it to XvT and then to XWA while I was at it. :)

This conversion was made using more then just "tie2xvt", about every aspect except the
actual texts was changed to get better results in XWA - however great care was taken to
retain the same atmosphere as the TIE version had. Thanks to CA:TAC VA Styles for porting the XvT
missiions to XWA for me.
