Battle Reviews

A collection of joke missions, and with 11 missions the joke gets pretty old pretty fast. I especially hated the mission where you have to chase and shoot at an invincible ship until the mission objective completes itself--most boring mission I have every played. This battle is good for some quick and easy RtF points, but it is not fun, not funny, and has no replay value.

Played on easy: Hilarious! I wasn't around back then but man I wish I was. I loved the humor in this battle.

Bonkers series of missions, which I loved. Nice to see a mission designer who has such a kooky sense of humour, and doesn't take themselves at all seriously. Some of the missions were...bizarre, but kept my interest. A couple were even a little tricky. ALT-E is your friend here - it will make you die (you will understand when you start playing through the missions). Great stuff!

Absolutely bonkers set of mission objectives. Comedy and in-jokes? Of course! These things are necessary from time to time. Even though these were fairly easy missions, dodging the TIE-A in Mission 9 took some doing and 10 was a puzzle to me, too before I figured out to just assist with the destruction of the CPOPOD myself. 6 and 7 required some careful and fast flying, too. Off-the-wall design but fun. I may come back to it someday.

Fun, silly nonsense.

My eighty-first battle in the TIE Corps.

As a former TCS (and former Tactical Office staff member under Frodo), how can I not love this battle? It is a wonderful bit of madness, full of laughs and technical tricks that often delight and provide unique challenges unlike anything else in the Compendium.

It also harkens back to a time when reviews didn't count for any kind of activity, and were very much in short supply! I believe Frodo made this primarily to get a reaction out of folks, knowing that most would either love it or hate it, but hopefully felt enough of either to submit a review. And so they have, for decades now... and hopefully decades more to come!

All hail the mighty Frodo! I'd have his children if i could.
One of the most interesting battles I've ever played.
Do yourself a favor and fly it.

I'm going to admit that I have never met Frodo, and to be honest, I hope I never do. This guy appears to be an absolute madman. I can see what he was trying to do with this battle. But it was no less of a mind mess regardless of that. The missions were short, yet surprisingly well put together. Other pilots have submitted bug reports for a collision between Dreadnaughts, I somehow feel as tho this is by Frodo's design, so I will not be submitting a bug report.

11 "missions" that you can each finish in seconds or that you have to sit out. in most of them a primary goal is that you die. so keep your fingers close to the eject button. I know we are not supposed to insult the person who made the battle. can we insult the person who aproved it though? please?

Why use many trick pony when one trick pony work just as good?

Not sure if it was the game or my stick being out of calibration but I found the battles to be pretty buggy honestly but I did find the battles for the most part to be fun and frustrating all at the same time particularly the last couple given I could shoot Frodo and not deal any damage but all in all a fun mission

I flew this as part of Raise the Flag competition 2021. Of all the XvT battles I have flown this year, both 96 and 99 are easily my two favorite battles. There is only so much you can do in these missions, but the use of game mechanics in these two battles are completely out of left field from everything you have ever flown in XvT. I will likely be revisiting these battles to get ideas for my own battles in the future.

Where do I begin with this example of Frodo's insanity? You're instantly thrust into a meta-storyline as a TAC mission tester (or, rather, a series of them) trying to escape the craziness of this battle. It does some pretty neat tricks, and I'll admit I giggled every time I died and got a 'mission complete' voice line.

This is hands down the funniest set of missions i've ever played. Sometimes its good to play a battle where you dont have to try so hard and just enjoy the commentary. Very good use of the game building mechanics

Mixed feelings, but mostly good, confused ones. I'm afraid I'll be haunted if I don't leave a review, so: Other reviews have pretty well covered the non sequitur-ness nature of the battles. It's absurd and I'm all about that. The mechanics, such as they are, are fairly straight forward. Take the goals literally. In the the final mission is a straight dogfight, just make sure you stick close to your ISD because he's always in a T/A.

I played on Easy. I'm not actually sure how this battle got passed testing, honestly. This is closer to a very quick visual novel than it is an actually battle. That said, the storyline is funny and it has some unique mechanics. Dying as a requirement is something I've never seen before.

A somewhat strange battle, relatively easy to complete but at times very amusing. It’s very different than other battles out there, having your death as a primary mission goal is not common to say the least!

The most well crafted missions in the entire collection. This is pure genius. La creme de la creme. Frodo is in action again and this time he's out for vengeance. If you haven't already played it yet, this should be your initiation to the EH.

This is probably the epitome of Frodo's craziness and creativity with both its good and the bad. As I flew this one it gave me a sense of Groundhog Day with a dose of Happy Deathday (if you haven't seen these two movies you should, especially Groundhog Day). I love his creativity. Also, most of Frodo's battles carry the hallmark of entertaining in-flight messaging.

Flew this on easy for the RTF 2021. I guess it was a weird battle when it was fresh, it's probably even weirder now. It has no sane plotline whatsoever and it's silly as hell. It was actually fun to fly it if you look at it as a demonstration of mission building skills.

There's a thin line between brilliance and insanity. Frodo proves again that it's impossible to tell which side of the line he falls on. I rated this mission an 11 out of 5, but had to deduct a star for every time I had to die >:( j/k I love battles that make me actually laugh out loud!

What on Earth did I just fly? This mission is...wow. I don't know where to begin. Inside jokes that were funny 10 years ago (and a member of certain circles) have not aged well, leaving this mission more than a little baffling. 2/5 just because there are no bugs and it was an easy 44pts for RtF...

Technical prowess. Shenanigans exploitation. Terrible experience. This battle is a jewel for those who are initiated in the inside jokes of Command Staff in those years. Otherwise, for the unknown layman, it's repetitive, tedious and what's more, felt like a waste of time. Sure, the occasional chuckle will appear, without a doubt. But felt like Alice's Mad Hatter designing a battle then falling asleep in a cloud of smoke while sharing a narghile with the Caterpillar. Easiest 10 FCHG points I've earnt, though. Crazy battle, look elsewhere if you are a square headed old man like myself, incapable of any humour.

As usual, a 'funny' battle that tries to hide unreasonably hard missions behind humour. Trying to inspect an ISD whilst being chased by missile armed A-Wings will never be funny.

By far the weirdest battle I've flown. But I think every mission here demonstrates the limits of creativity in XvT. From the strange objectives and triggers to having to die almost every mission, this one was a challenge yet fun.

I guess it's a simple case of you love it or you hate it and the 10 (11) mission mess is not my taste I'm afraid, if you don't like Frodo's "quirky humor" missions don't fly this. I'm afraid for me it is a bad joke that keeps getting worse. Some of the missions are fun and very challenging to complete but getting killed every other mission became real old, real quick. Didn't make me want to post a review either. Sorry Frodo, not one of your better battles in my opinion.

I hate you, Insane Halfling, do you hear me? HATE!! A 5 for you for being so damned crazy!! I enjoyed this battle so much that now I'd like to scourge all The Shire just for fun. xD I agree with LCM Holtz: it could have been nice to turn your starfighter to "pipe tobacco" in the last mission, and Palpatine knows how the hell can someone achieve those amazing highscores for missions 1 and 8! By the way, are you sure that your beloved ISD Intrepid can be disabled in Hard? I guess yes, given the classic Brucmack's annoying highscore there but hang me if I know how! Oh, well, this guy could even have been capable of disabling it himself... with a T/F!

Completely nuts!!!! I like this kind of battle with crazy humor. There were things I didn't enjoy much, like some missions being too difficult for a shieldless craft, and the fact that there were too many missions that looked alike...still, I give it a 5 for the humor!

After playing this I don't know if I dare not to post a review! A crazy mission and pretty funny too. Surviving in a Tie when needed can be quite challenging. The only bad thing about this battle is in the last mission where it would have been good to be able to take revenge on the hobbit :D

This battle was.... different. Very unique and despite te humorous nature of the battle (wich I generally don't care for) it was good. I did really enjoy this one.

Sooo many missions, but, at least they were each quite simple. I really iked the introduction of the omnipotence of Frodo into his battles.

Gonna kill the hobbit for this one. No really was alot of fun to fly and had some very intersting plts to it, YOU MUST DIE. missions where I have to die, this one was new to me. Never knew bag end was so big, thought it was just under a tree. Loved this one and hope theres more like. Nice Job Frodo

Well 10 Mission Mess is a good name. A very unique idea for a battle but the missions kind of drag on. Even at 11 missions its quick to get through.

If nothing else the battles unique.. who else would kill so many poor hapless beta testers (tcs's)?;p. Also, I believe the pilot (you) dieing as a primary mission objective is a original idea- that and in the one missions COL Morgan did more work there than in 96' as a Prae! Fo' shizzle! ;p.

Frodo all the way. If there were no name attached to this thing, who else do you think would have created it? Yes, the missions are all dumb, but that's not the point. It is probably one of the most original and well-carried out ideas for a plotline in this whole database. Definitely worth flying once for the quickest 11 FCHG points ever, and worth flying again to catch all the goofball humor mixed into the battle. ... PAR!

One of the most ANNOYING battles ever - FRODO you should have your Brain checked... - this is Annoying and mostly boring :( -- ABSOLUTELY awful battle to use in a comp.

Funny battle Frodo. Long enough to help your FCHG out, funny enough to let you have a good time, and at the same time frustrating because Frodo gets to kill you. :P Another one of Frodo's great battles!

It's like one of those jokes that isn't funny at first, but then becomes funny by it's own irony, or something like that.

I loved it. I beta tested it, I flew it and I loved it. Very original idea. Nice work Fro!

Best ever made.......No, brilliant and imaginative........Yes. Best played whilst consuming large quintiles of Alcohol based beverages. Sorry and with a fish stuck in your ear.

PAR!!!:9

Amusing, but the missions themselves didn't have much action in them. 69 got a bit of action though, which was fun. All in all, I'd say the battle's a birdie, but not quite eagle material.

Great battle, Originaly it was supposed to be the 20 mission mess with 22 missions but I couldn't make an opt and ender didn't want to make one for us so it ended up being this... Yay!

Well made, and rather funny. I would have given it a four, but that bit of innuendo caused me to give it a 5. Excellent work on this one, Frodo. Oh, dear me. Almost forgot: PAR!!!

Buehehehehhee!!! uahahahahahah! Mwuahahahahah! Hihihihih! The most funny battle I've ever flown :P

Aah... Grand Battle this is. These are true missions, for true pilots!

I was forced to fly this...and it had one mission more than it should have had. It was fun, though. Monkey poo to you, Frooodoooo.

Good overall, but the missions where you just fly around are somewhat annoying.

Great Battle Loved the fact that you had to die to win made things more fun and it went on forever

Great stuff...dying every mission is frustrating, but not too different from lots of other stuff I fly on hard :P

Probably the best battle ever made! When I saw the number of missions I thought "Oh, this will take me almost a week to finish", but it took me only an hour, because I couldn't stop playing! And study this mission, all you mission creators! There's a lot of stuff here that can be used on more serious stuff. PAR!

Confusing and irritating, just as its creator =)

Must... review... battle. Don't forget Alt+E (eject).

Some mysterious force forced me to PAR :P Well very good battle kinda funny :P DUnno if i enjoyed getting killed on every missioon tho :P

Finally! A feasible action plan to utilise TAC reservists! j/k :P More battles like this, please :) It was tightly designed, easy to play through and FUN. There were just one or two minor phrasing errors, which keeps this from being a five. Almost Frodo. Almost :)

10 erm I mean 11 missions of pure greatness :P It was actually fun to play and had some... uniquely interesting aspects to it :P

The Most daring, amazing and Awesome battle of all time has finally been released at a mission compendium near you! These 11 missions will simply strike you as stupid, idiotic...maybe even DUMB! And you'll have a blast giving 35 minutes of your time to get 11 FCHG points!! ;)

Previous report on Mission #9 by GN Polo is actually for Mission #6.
There is a problem with Mission #9 though: the briefing and animation both state the container is set to Invincible and must be destroyed by repeatedly crashing into it. The container is not set to Invincible.

Mission 6: DREAD group Gangsta fly "through" each other due to bad waypoint pathing. This can cause them to be destroyed before the ISD Intrepid is disabled.

Mission 9: DREAD Gangsta collide with each other in pairs above and below the Intrepid.
