Battle Reviews

Yeah, that we would take him after his actions against us is a bit far fetched, but I love this story.

Boliv's write-up below covers how to actually play this very well, but in short: EHM is broken, must use ZIP, must unzip mission 5 from EH.zip, password is RWROCKS. Lovely.

Let me ignore the above and rate it on content: I think it's a pretty nifty battle. There's a couple battles out there telling the story of someone's defection to the EH, but this one stands out to me as working better than most. Most of the plot comes through pretty well, although Mission #4 could have been a bit clearer - important plot gets jumbled a bit in the logs. Make sure you read the e-mails!

With that out of the way - this battle, in its current state, should never have been approved for the compendium. Separate files for Mission #5 (with only one, the EH mission, eligible for H.S.) locked behind zipped passwords is unacceptable, and would not have been approved by future TAC offices. If you want to do choose-your-own-adventure style missions, look to TIE-BHG #3, which uses difficulty levels as a way to give the player choice without the extra legwork.

I really struggled with how to rate this battle, as the functionality definitely is a factor. Ultimately I rated it just on the battle itself, which was interesting and worked properly, once you figured out how to get it to do so. I don't really understand the plot point in M4 where you have to kill EH fighters, then defect to them or not. I don't think immediately following the slaughter of a bunch of their pilots that they'd take you. But maybe I just hold grudges.

Helpful hints: In order to get this battle to function properly, you MUST download the ZIP file and extract it. Inside that file are two further zipped folders, Rebel or EH. At the end of M4, you choose to either remain with the Rebels, or defect to the EH. Depending on your choice, you're supposed to install one of the two M5s to complete the battle. These zip folders are password protected (for some unknown reason) and the password is in a radio message in M4 that I completely missed. So to help you all, the password is RWROCKS. Once unzipped, copy and paste the selected file into the MISSIONS directory in your XWA game folder and relaunch. I did this after installing the EHM and using EHBL and it worked fine for me.

According to one of the many readmes in the battle file, in order to be eligible for a HS on M5, you must play the EH mission. Not sure if that's still correct, but figured I'd mention it in case someone else didn't read the file.

Many thanks to COL Locke Setzer for helping me figure out how to finish this battle and share this information with everyone else.

.......................................................................................................

This battle has an excellent plot and is so well laid in the field. Throughout the campaign, missions are challenging yet acceptable, and the idea of a split end is very original, but for one major detail, the complexity and buggy version. If you can manage to install the final battle, it's worth the ride

I don't know what happened between 2001 and now, but this battle is 100% impossible to complete without skipping. Mission 1 crashes in the briefing when you use the EHBL, and Mission 2 goes literally nowhere. It's a shame, really, as I was looking forward to the different endings. As they say in Eurovision, Nil Poits!

Nice idea for the dual path to finish this battle. There were no major errors in this battle, although I noticed two Bulk Freighters spontaneously exploded in mission #3, right after I got into the convoy area. I believe that in this mission (it may have been another, I'n not sure) the Valiant is mentioned twice in the Mission Craft list. I kinda missed heavy dogfighting. All these targets that needed inspecting and/or destroying had very little defenses to my liking.

Excellent idea. Nice idea and there's alot of good dofighting and such. Well mixed level with a bit of everything.

Very smooth battle - no bugs, no hiccups, no problems.

I really enjoyed playing this battle. The plotline was very well scripted and pretty well thought out. I also enjoyed the fact that you could choose your own ending to the battle. The missions were easily flyable and were really fun and not too challenging. The briefings were good and explained things well. All in all, a job well done!

This is a very enjoyable battle. It's not too hard for the average pilot, which is a nice change of pace, yet it is challenging. It has excellent variety, and has no dumb frustrations that some other battles are saddled with. Plus, the alternate endings are very clever. Also, the battle was not buggy! Lots of fun!

Well made missions, but my one beef is that the navbuoys were too close on the last mission! I wanted to fly for the rebels! the rebels!!! hehe, good battle.

Excelent battle, except for the fact that I had to blow up EH ships in the first 4 missions. Loved the alterniate endings.

Nice battle, only you shuld do somethink with those links, dont working:/ P>S> Thanks for sent battle file to me;)

Good mission

This is quality, and it the first ever battle to have a split storyline. Keep `em coming, RW!

it is a Great battle ;) Variable Ending rocks. Immortal in IW missions rocks :P

I flew this in the early stages of the battles development and it rocked! Way to go RW!

Nice battle. I give a 5 because so far, this is the only battle on the mission compedium that has a variable ending that depends solely on decisions you make in previous battles.

THE EHM FILE FOR THIS BATTLE IS NOT FUNCTIONAL. DO NOT USE!

This battle must be manually installed because the pilot has an "option" to choose a EH mission or a Rebel mission for Mission #5. The pilot must unzip the mission they want to use. The EHM file includes the zipped up Mission #5s, but has not been properly encrypted to use either for Mission #5.

EHM file needs to be re-encrypted with a distinct Mission #5 selected (likely the EH mission, as that is the only version acceptable for high scores)

Mission #5 has no briefing at all and crashes everytime. Impossible to finish the battle after 4 long missions. Frustrating

COL Phalk Sturm

Mission 1 has a briefing problem, when skipping to next page the game crashes. Also while flying mission 1, it's perfectly possible to inspect all the survivors but then a nav buoy or an object is supposed to appear, as one should inspect the sensor as the mission commands, and after 40 minutes of waiting, nothing happens.

GN Stryker

2020-09-13

No-CD craft patch fixed previous errors, but after making decision whether to defect or not, no missions are available (perhaps due to EHBL?)

GN Stryker

2020-09-10

Mission 1 crashes during the briefing when launched through EHBL.
Mission 2 is impossible due to missing HS Buoy for next area.

This battle is completely broken. 5th mission doesn't even have a briefing and crashes when you launch. 2nd mission tells you to investigate some sensor readings - there are none. Ended up skipping it.

LC Nile Rosenau

Mission #2: The briefing clearly states that the Valiant will be there to assist in the rescue. When I hyper into the area, the Formidable is there, which literally hypers out in just a few seconds. Orders are still coming from the Valiant. The as soon as all pods are inspected, we get the 'Investigate Sensors' order from the phantom Valiant. However there are no sensor arrays nor a hyper bouy that leads to them.

Also, the briefing in mission #1 cause XWA to crash several times when launched from the EHBL. However I was able to get through it launching the game manually.

GN Dunta Polo

Mission 2: Objective is mislabelled as 'Return to the MC90 Hope' instead of MC90 Valiant.

Mission 3: Duplicate MC90 Valiant craft in the mission.

Mission 5: The MC90 Valiant and ISD Immortal get far too close to each other during the battle. The Assault Shuttle that boards the Valiant often clips through it as a result. INT Fairchild is misspelled and the ship leaves before the NR craft have been defeated.

HA Anahorn Dempsey

Last mission (EH version) needs some changes. The INT Fairchild is misspelled, it hypers out before the enemy is defeated, and after capture, the Valiant flies straight through the Immortal.
